Date of observance: November 26, 2025
Introduction
Odana Sasthi is a beautiful festival that marks the beginning of the winter season in the Vaishnava calendar. On this day, devotees lovingly offer new winter garments to the Deities, signifying care and affection for the Lord as the weather becomes cooler. The word Odana means to cover or wrap, and Sasthi refers to the sixth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Margasirsha.
Significance of the Festival
Just as devotees lovingly dress the Deities in different outfits throughout the year, Odana Sasthi marks a special time when the Lord is first offered warm winter clothing. From this day onward, the Deities are dressed in thicker garments made of wool, velvet, or other warm materials to protect Them from the cold.
This festival reflects the personal and intimate relationship between the Lord and His devotees. The Lord does not need protection from the weather, yet devotees express their love by serving Him as if He were one of their own family members. Such affectionate service is an important aspect of bhakti.
Scriptural Reference
In the Jagannatha Temple at Puri, Odana Sasthi is celebrated with great devotion. The temple priests change Lord Jagannatha’s outfit and wrap Him in new winter cloth. This tradition is also followed in many Vaishnava temples, including ISKCON centers worldwide.
Srila Prabhupada explained that the Lord accepts service not because He needs it, but to give His devotees an opportunity to express their love and devotion. Festivals like Odana Sasthi remind us that devotional service is personal, loving, and full of care for Krishna.
