ree

Date of observance: November 17, 2025

Introduction

Today we honor the disappearance day of Sri Saranga Thakura, a great devotee and associate of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Known for his deep humility, renunciation, and pure devotion, Sri Saranga Thakura serves as an eternal inspiration to all who walk the path of bhakti.

Eternal Identity

According to Gaura Ganoddesha Dipika, Sri Saranga Thakura is an incarnation of a dear associate of Lord Krishna from Dvapara Yuga. In Gauranga Lila, he appeared as a pure devotee completely surrendered to the service of the Lord. His life was centered around chanting the holy names and worshiping the Supreme Lord with a simple heart.

Service and Pastimes

Sri Saranga Thakura lived near the Ganges River at Navadvipa and performed his daily worship with deep concentration and love. Although he was a great Vaishnava, he preferred solitude and did not seek disciples or followers.

However, on one occasion, Lord Chaitanya personally instructed him to initiate a disciple. Out of obedience, Sri Saranga Thakura decided that whoever he saw first the next morning would receive initiation. The next day, he saw the body of a young boy who had just passed away. Following the Lord’s order with complete faith, he chanted the holy names and touched the boy, who immediately came back to life. The boy was then initiated by Sri Saranga Thakura and became known as Murari Thakura, one of the Lord’s dear devotees.

This pastime beautifully illustrates the unlimited mercy and spiritual potency of a pure devotee of the Lord.
