Purushottam Maas Mahatmya (Glories of the Sacred Month)

Purushottam Maas, also known as Adhik Maas (extra lunar month), appears approximately once every three years in the Vedic calendar. This month is considered extremely sacred and spiritually powerful because it is dedicated to the Supreme Lord, Lord Krishna, who is also known as Purushottam (the Supreme Person).

Why is Purushottam Maas Special?

Originally, this extra month was called Mal Maas (inauspicious month) and was neglected by people. Feeling rejected, the month approached Lord Krishna for shelter.

Lord Krishna compassionately accepted it, gave it His own name — Purushottam Maas, and declared:

👉 “Any devotional service performed during this month yields unlimited spiritual benefits.

What to Do During Purushottam Maas?

This is the best time to increase devotion and spiritual practices:

• 📖 Read the Bhagavad Gita daily

• 🪔 Offer prayers and light a lamp to the Lord

• 🍚 Perform charity (especially food donation)

• 📿 Chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra:
  Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
  Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare

• 🙏 Observe fasting and follow a pure, sattvic lifestyle

❌ What to Avoid?

• Avoid auspicious ceremonies like marriage, housewarming, etc.

• Avoid starting new material ventures or businesses

• Avoid tamasic habits (non-veg food, alcohol, etc.)

📚 Scriptural Importance

The glories of Purushottam Maas are described in the Skanda Purana, where it is stated:

👉 “Even a small pious activity performed in this month grants immense spiritual merit.”
