The Day Your Devotion Becomes Imperishable: Akshaya Tritiya & Chandana Yatra
As the sweet spring days in Sri Vrindavan Dham begin to yield to the intense, golden heat of the summer sun, a beautiful transformation takes place in the hearts of the Vrajavasis. Driven by pure, spontaneous affection (priti), the devotees cannot bear to see their beloved Lordships experience even the slightest discomfort from the rising temperature.
To soothe and bring cooling relief to the transcendental bodies of Sri Sri Krishna Balarama, Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara, and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, the glorious 21-day Chandana Yatra festival begins on the highly auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya.
Akshaya Tritiya: The Day of Imperishable Devotion
The Vedic scriptures reveal that Akshaya Tritiya is a day of supreme success. The word Akshaya translates to "that which never diminishes" or "the imperishable."
While many in the material world seek this day to acquire perishable gold and wealth, the true wealth of a Vaishnava is bhakti—pure devotional service.
Any act of charity, any round of the Holy Name chanted, and any menial service rendered to the Lord on this day creates a permanent, indestructible deposit in our spiritual account.
It was on this very day that the poor, pure-hearted Brahmin Sudama Vipra visited Lord Krishna in Dwaraka. He offered the Lord a humble palmful of chipped rice with deep love. In return for that simple, broken rice, the Lord gave Sudama unlimited, imperishable opulence both in this world and the next.
The Origin: A Story of Pure, Loving Separation
The tradition of Chandana Yatra carries the fragrance of the intense love of Srila Madhavendra Puri, the great root of our disciplic succession.
While Madhavendra Puri was staying in the sacred land of Vrindavan, the Deity of Gopala (Sri Nathji) appeared to him in a dream. With a voice filled with affection, the Lord said, "O Madhava, I am feeling intense heat. Please bring sandalwood from the Malaya province, grind it into a fine paste, and smear it over My body. Only then will the burning sensation go away."
To satisfy the desire of his beloved Lord, the elderly Madhavendra Puri did not hesitate. He traveled hundreds of miles on foot, begging for his maintenance, just to collect the authentic sandalwood.
When he reached Remuna, the Deity of Khirachora Gopinathaconfirmed the absolute oneness of the Lord's forms. Gopinatha spoke to him in a dream and said, "There is no difference between Me and the Gopala in Vrindavan. If you smear the sandalwood paste on My body here, Gopala will automatically feel the cooling effect there." This pastime beautifully illustrates that the Lord is completely conquered by the loving efforts of His surrendered servants.
The Festival of Cooling Love at Krishna Balaram Mandir
Following in the sacred footsteps of Srila Madhavendra Puri, the atmosphere at the Krishna Balaram Mandir becomes saturated with sweet, cooling devotion during these 21 days:
The Hard Work of Love: Day after day, hundreds of devotees—young and old, local and international—sit together for hours in the temple courtyard. With pure hearts and to the accompaniment of melodious Hare Krishna kirtan, they manually grind heavy blocks of sandalwood on stone rolling boards to create the fresh paste.
The Divine Darshan: On the first day (Akshaya Tritiya), the Deities are completely covered from head to toe in this fragrant, cooling white and yellow paste, resembling pure marble statues. They are decorated with intricate paintings using forest dyes and adorned with light, cooling dresses made of soft cotton and fresh flowers.
The Evening Boat Pastimes: To further relieve the Lord from the summer heat, the small Utsava Deities are taken on a swan-shaped boat in a pond filled with cool water and flower petals, surrounded by lamps and ecstatic kirtan.
Prayers for Our Hearts on This Day
As we approach this festival on April 20, let us offer two intimate prayers at the lotus feet of the Divine Couple:
To Become the Sandalwood: Just as the sandalwood block must be ground and worn down to release its sweet fragrance and cooling effect for the Lord, let us pray to wear down our false ego in the service of the Vaishnavas, releasing the natural fragrance of our soul's devotion.
To Cool the Lord's Heart: Let us pray that by our chanting, our controlled senses, and our cooperative service, we may bring a cooling relief and a smile to the face of Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara.
"O Lord, please accept the cooling paste of my small, broken heart's devotion."
All glories to the cooling waves of Sri Chandana Yatra!
